“Arnie is our ‘go-to-man’ for Stockfood”
Dairy Farmers John and Glenda Guthrie claim Arnie Brown, sales rep for J swap Stockfoods, is the ‘go-to-man’ for all their stock food needs and whose advice can be trusted. Such is the relationship between the Guthrie’s and Arnie that together they will sit down around the kitchen table to best plan out the years feeding programme.
Farming 550 cows at Whakamaru for the last 40 years, John believes that using stock feed is an important management tool and that feeding stock food allows you to “fill the cow with what is missing”. “Feeding PKE for us means that you may work harder as you are always feeding out but it makes it more pleasant to farm&rdquo
Using a feed pad and concrete troughs the Guthrie’s find they do not waste as much PKE or maize, compared with feeding it on the paddock. “We believe cows eat more and we use less because they are eating out of the troughs. It also allows us to manage our pastures more efficiently. We are able to graze our hill paddocks less which are harder on the cows and avoid pugging of our paddocks”.
John and Glenda feed their cows a base ration and then top up on grass. This means each cow is getting 4-5 kg of dry matter as a mixture of Palm Kernel Extract and Maize plus grass.
John has used other stock food companies in the past but says J Swap Stockfoods are hard to beat. “Swaps give good service and sort out a sensible contract” To John this means a sensible pricing structure, reasonable amounts and a guaranteed supply delivered within reasonable time frames.
Additionally the relationship with Arnie is crucial. Arnie knows where all John’s run offs are and ensures deliveries go to where the stock are. “I think Swaps are onto it” states John.
