Peter Russell
“PKE – it’s in the shed, into the cow and in the vat before you’ve paid for it”Peter and Nancy Russell winter milk 230 Friesian Jersey Cross cows just north of Morrinsville and reckon it’s the way to go. In Nancy’s mind you can’t beat raising calves in short sleeves and sunshine. “The calves just don’t seem to get ill”.
This is the dairy farm the Russell’s have converted to dairy, with Peter and Nancy converting their Tahuna Road property three seasons ago from dry stock back to a dairy farm. The beauty of this for them is being able to custom design and set up their feed pad specifically for feeding stock food to their herd. Peter believes that if you feed your cows properly you’ll solve 90% of your problems.
Relocating from Paihiatua the Russell’s have a good relationship with Swap Stockfoods. It all started from entering a competition Swap Stockfoods were running at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek. The Russell’s entered and won a trip to Sydney. From here the relationship has grown but this has mainly been based on two key areas — the service from the company and the relationship they have with Jo McLachlan, Territory Manager with Swap Stockfoods.
When queried about Swaps as a company to deal with Peter says “There is always someone pleasant on the phone, the delivery is prompt and the drivers are great. Not only friendly but they stick the PKE in the right place. The beauty of using Swaps is that it’s just one phone call and it’s all done. And the price is always spot on” says Peter. He reminds Jo that he every now and then he checks the pricing against the competitors. To date there has never been an issue, which Jo reminds him is thanks to her! “And Swap’s PKE is the best you can get” he adds.
This spring Peter has opted to use a custom mix of PKE, maize and mineral boost for the first time. “I’ve just been concerned that with all this rain that the minerals may have been washed out of the soil”. Due to the convenience and peace of mind, Peter is now considering adding zinc to the PKE for summer.
Seeing the Russell’s cows come onto the feed pad to eat gives Peter and Nancy great pleasure to watch. They laugh about how they obviously love the PKE and point out cows standing with their front legs in the feed troughs. “That’s Kylie — she loves her food”. After about an hour on the feed pad the cows are done. Another great example of happy cows and happy farmer’s courteousy of J Swap Stockfoods.
